Prof. Antoine F. Mulaba - Bafubiandi is the Founding chair of the Mineral Processing and Technology Research Centre, is Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and The Built Environment at the University of Johannesburg. While in engineering field his passion spans from green economy, sustainability, responsible consumption and production, circular economy, industry symbiosis, waste to energy, use of appropriate technologies in the mineral industry, his research interests in business management include the use of disruptive technologies in organizations and businesses, the setting and implementation of change management, governance, strategy, technology development, rural development, sustainability, technology development, optimization of productivity, decision making, use of 4 IR in organizations with societal impact, modelling. With a doctoral qualification, MEng., a 5 years Licence in Applied Sciences and a MBA , he has a proven academic and research leadership which made him listed as “established researcher” by the South African National Research Foundation (NRF). He is the first Head of School of Mining, Metallurgy and Chemical Engineering (for more than two terms) at the Faculty of Engineering and The Built Environment of the University of Johannesburg. His list of publications shows more than 100 research outputs in international peer refereed journals, international conferences, technical notes and reports for the industry. He has been a consultant for many mining and process companies in South Africa as well as globally. His passion for innovation, technology development and societal as well as industry problem solving led him to successfully supervise and graduate more than 10 doctoral researchers and 300 Master’s degree students in business as well as in engineering fields. Most of his ex- students are now professors at universities and senior executives in companies globally. Among his most recent process and technology innovation achievements one counts the discovery of a pre-processing route of platinum group metals sludge for an improved flotation value recovery, the innovative use of locally found carbonates for Portland cement clinker production and the use of microwave energy dedicated cavities for sandstones and slate small-scale mining. His collaborative work on the knowledge and technology development on the production of engineered stones and his work on gemstone and energy minerals traceability using the blockchain technology are noted.
